The Fort Stanwix National Monument features the recreated "fort that never surrendered" despite a prolonged siege in 1777 by British, German, Canadian and American Indian troops. A wide variety of living history and tour programs are offered at the site which give visitors a deeper understanding of 18th century military life. Just across the street, the Willett Center preserves and displays artifacts from the military settlement including weapons, furnishings and documents. The fort is located just south of historic downtown Rome.
